Every banked Codex reset OpenAI granted in June has now expired. OpenAI’s Codex referral help page puts the rule in one line: a banked rate-limit reset has to be used within 30 days after it is added to your bank, unless the offer says otherwise. The count runs from the grant date, so a reset you held for a crunch week burned down while you held it.
What a banked reset does
A banked reset is a saved rate-limit reset you spend on demand. You hit your cap, you trigger the reset, and your usage window refills right then instead of when the normal refill rolls around.
OpenAI rolled banking out on June 11, 2026, the first day of the referral window. The announcement from OpenAI’s developer account said rate limit banking was going to “Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users, with the first reset on us.” That plan list matters, because the free launch reset went wider than Plus and Pro.
Where the 30 days count from
Your 30 days start the moment the reset lands in your bank. Saving it for later does not pause anything. Anyone who took the launch reset on June 11 and set it aside for a heavy sprint was out of luck by July 11, whether they opened Codex that month or not.
The referral window stacked more resets on the same clock
OpenAI’s referral help page says eligible Plus and Pro users could invite up to three friends between June 11 and June 24, 2026. When an invited friend sent their first Codex message, both sides banked a reset. Stack three referrals onto the launch reset and you were holding four, each carrying its own grant date and its own 30-day expiry.
Rewards land when the invitee sends that first message, not when you send the invite, so a late referral could have dropped a reset into your bank in early July. Those are the only ones from this promotion with any chance of still being alive today, and they are days from lapsing.
Devs asked for a longer window and got no answer
Issue #28888 on the openai/codex repo, opened June 18 and titled “Extend banked Codex reset expiration beyond 30 days,” says the current window “makes banked resets feel easy to lose accidentally.” The reporter offers three alternatives: no expiration while the subscription is active, a 12-month window, or a substantially longer grace period. The example output in the issue shows an expiration a full year out.
As of today the issue is still open, with nobody assigned and no reply from OpenAI.
The visibility complaint got a partial fix
Issue #28161, opened June 14, asked OpenAI to show an expiration date for each available reset. The reporter said the desktop account menu showed “2 resets available” and nothing about when either one died. Issue #28805 makes the broader ask, covering reset count, expiration, and eligibility across the desktop app, web, CLI, and IDE extension. Both are open.
Dates did show up in the desktop app after that. A user posting in OpenAI’s developer forum on July 8 described the Windows app listing four resets with expirations around July 12, July 18, July 27, and August 1.
Resets have gone missing before their listed date
That same forum thread reports the uglier problem. The user spent one reset on July 8, leaving three. By July 13 only two were left, dated August 1 and August 12, meaning the July 18 and July 27 resets vanished while they were still supposed to be live. The user also reported older resets disappearing as newly earned ones arrived.
An OpenAI staff account replied in the thread that the team is “investigating” and asked affected users to file a support ticket at help.openai.com with timestamps and screenshots. The user who opened the thread filed one and said they got no confirmation back.
What to do with the next one
Spend a banked reset the first time you hit your cap after it lands. Sitting on one for a future crunch is exactly how the June batch got burned. If you somehow hold more than one, spend the oldest first.
Write down the grant date yourself and check it against the expiry the app shows you, because the forum thread says those two have not always matched.
