Every Banked Codex Reset From June Has Already Expired

OpenAI's launch giveaway and the June 11-24 referral window let Codex users stack up to four saved rate-limit resets. All of them ran a 30-day clock counted from the grant date, so that batch is gone, and the GitHub requests to extend the window and fix reset visibility are all still open.

ReleaseAug 3, 2026

What Codex shipped while you were heads-down

Multi-repo review, voice in the desktop app, Sign in with ChatGPT, and a CLI release all landed in the back half of July. Here's the catch-up version.

ModelsAug 3, 2026

GPT-5.4 retires from Codex on August 31 for ChatGPT sign-ins

OpenAI is pulling GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini from Codex on August 31 for users signed in with ChatGPT. Both models stay on the API. If either one is pinned in a workspace default, a custom agent, or a scheduled task, that config needs a new model name before the cutoff.

ReleaseJul 21, 2026

Codex 0.145.0 adds forced-rm detection and full-access confirmation — a week after the $HOME wipes

The stable release strengthens approval handling with better forced-rm detection and consistent full-access confirmation, aimed at the same failure mode that deleted users' home directories last week. It also stabilizes multi-agent V2 and imports agents from Cursor and Claude Code.

IncidentJul 17, 2026

OpenAI confirms GPT-5.6 Codex has deleted users' home directories

Two developers reported losing files and a production database to the Sol model in full-access mode. Codex engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux confirmed the bug and called it an honest mistake.

StatsJul 15, 2026

Codex headlines say 6, 7, and 8 million users — OpenAI's posts count Codex and ChatGPT Work together

OpenAI Codex lead Tibo Sottiaux posted 6, 7, and 8 million milestones on July 12–14, all measuring combined 'active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work.' Much of the press coverage has rendered them as Codex-only counts, and sometimes as weekly figures, which OpenAI has not said.

ReleaseJul 15, 2026

OpenAI's First Hardware Is a $230 Macropad for Driving Codex Agents

The Codex Micro, co-designed with keyboard maker Work Louder, puts live agent status lights and a reasoning dial on your desk. It launched July 15 in a limited run.

StatsJul 14, 2026

Codex and ChatGPT Work hit 8 million users — but read the denominator before you call it a tripling

Codex engineering lead Tibo Sottiaux said on X that combined active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work reached 8 million, and that OpenAI is resetting usage limits again. It is a real milestone from a named source — but it counts a different thing than the 5-million weekly-Codex figure, so the two numbers do not stack.

WatchdogJul 14, 2026

Codex now encrypts the prompts it sends to sub-agents — and your local audit trail went with them

A PR merged June 5 encrypts multi-agent v2 message payloads, so spawn_agent, send_message, and followup_task no longer write readable task text to your local rollout history. An open bug report calls it a regression. OpenAI has not replied on the issue.

LimitsJul 14, 2026

OpenAI took the 5-hour cap off Codex — and never wrote it down

The rolling 5-hour usage window stopped appearing for Plus, Pro, and Business users around July 12. The weekly limit stays. OpenAI has announced none of it: the change is absent from the official changelog, and the only public record is users noticing their own dashboards.

WatchdogJul 13, 2026

Codex's official docs now redirect to learn.chatgpt.com — and the brand keeps drifting toward ChatGPT

Every developers.openai.com/codex URL we tested returns a 308 permanent redirect to a docs hub titled 'ChatGPT Learn' — verified first-hand July 9. OpenAI has announced nothing about a rename, but if your bookmarks, scripts, or tutorials hardcode the old URLs, treat the move as permanent.

StatsJul 13, 2026

Codex passed 5 million weekly users — and five more limit resets are on the clock

OpenAI says Codex crossed 5 million weekly users on June 2, 2026, up from roughly 600,000 at the start of the year. Sam Altman has pledged a usage-limit reset at every additional million weekly users up to 10 million, which turns the growth curve itself into a recurring event worth watching.

ReleaseJul 13, 2026

Codex merges into the ChatGPT desktop app as GPT-5.6 goes GA — the biggest platform week of the year

OpenAI folded the standalone Codex app into ChatGPT on July 9 and shipped GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna the same day. Here's what actually changed, what it costs, and what it signals about where the Codex brand is heading.

ReleaseJul 13, 2026

Codex Remote goes GA: your phone can now drive Codex on your desktop

Codex Remote reached general availability on June 25 with authenticated QR pairing from the ChatGPT mobile app to Mac and Windows hosts. A July 6 iOS update followed with Codex task creation, search, and management from the phone — plus SSH shortcuts.
